ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College men's soccer team lost 2-0 to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Trine (Ind.) University this afternoon at Weaver Field in Angola, Indiana.
Neither team was able to score a goal in the first half, with the Comets holding a slight advantage in total shots, 10-9. Olivet had a chance to go up 1-0 in the 50th but missed a penalty kick attempt. Seven minutes and 39 seconds later, the Thunder took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Evan VanBelle. Trine added an insurance goal with 4:31 left in the game.
For the game, the Thunder edged the Comets in total shots, 18-15, including a 5-4 margin in shots on-goal. Freshmen Matthew Henderson, Alistair Law and Jason Olinger each had three shots. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Grashik collected three saves, while playing the entire game in net.
"We had the chance to take the game by the scruff of the neck in the first half after hitting the crossbar on a shot from Jason Olinger," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "Jason hit the bar again, followed by a shot by Alistair Law, which was cleared off the line.
"I was pleased with the amount of opportunities we created today but we could have also pushed for more by getting earlier deliveries into the box. To be fair, Trine took its opportunities and deserved the win today."
Olivet travels to play Adrian College Saturday night at 7 p.m.
"Our guys worked hard and come away bitterly disappointed yet again," said Bulley. "We now turn our attention to Saturday and Adrian."
