ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team was shutout by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 3-0, today at Alumni Field in Albion.
The Britons led 1-0 at halftime behind an early goal in the seventh minute of the game. Albion added another goal in the 61st minute and a third goal in the 79th minute.
"Mistakes cost us the game," said Olivet head coach Dan Bulley. "We were up against it going in to the game with three injuries preventing our experienced players from getting involved. However, this did again give our freshmen and sophomores opportunity to play many minutes.
"Excuses aside, we need to keep looking at ourselves individually and collectively and start to take a little more responsibility than what we have in the opening nine games."
The Comets finished the game with seven total shots, including three on-goal. Sophomores Vince Geremia and Evan Shambaugh each recorded two shots. Both of Shambaugh's shots were placed on-frame. Senior Ryan Grashik started the game in goal, allowing two goals and making four saves in 75 minutes of action. Freshman Noah Thelen completed the game in net and yielded the third goal.
Olivet is back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Calvin College at noon.
"We will be in tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at 6 a.m. to iron out a few issues and we will go into Saturday's game against #4 in the nation Calvin understanding that work rate, togetherness, and responsibility will get us through this rough patch. It is certainly a different situation to be in, but people show their true colors during these times and it is up to these young men that mc one out on top."
