Men’s soccer: Schulz’s goals lift Olivet to 2-1 overtime win over Adrian
Senior Zach Schulz scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the Olivet College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Adrian College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Zach Schulz scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the Olivet College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Adrian College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the win, the Comets stay in fourth-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings with a 7-6 record.
The Bulldogs led 1-0 at halftime behind a goal by Crystal Brown in the 30th minute. Olivet scored the equalizer only 24 seconds into the second half. Schulz received a pass from sophomore Gregory Petty, and rolled a shot on the ground, which found the back of the net at the far post.
The Comets had several great scoring chances later in the half. A header by freshman Joby Griggs sailed just right of the goal. Schulz had a shot go wide of the goal, and another shot on a breakaway clang off the post.
Schulz took a shot which was blocked by the defense but the defender was called for a hand ball three minutes and 25 seconds into the overtime period. The foul resulted in the penalty kick try for Schulz. He ripped a shot inside the near post for the winning goal.
For the game, Olivet dominated the stat sheet with a 30-4 advantage in total shots, including a 20-1 edge in the second half and overtime. The Comets also out-cornered the Bulldogs, 7-1. Schulz registered a team-leading eight shots. Griggs, senior Jared Wilson-Santos and freshman David Magallon each had four. Junior keeper Ryan Grashik collected one save while playing the entire game in goal.
Olivet ends the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. game at Calvin College.
