OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Trine (Ind.) University, 3-2, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Despite the Comets dominating play in the first half, the Thunder led 1-0 behind a goal by Brec Musselman with 1:14 left before halftime. Trine stretched its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Dalton Mullennix in the 53rd minute.
Olivet cut its deficit in half in the 58th minute. Senior Jared Wilson-Santos was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Sophomore Gregory Petty missed the PK, but the keeper could not control the ball, and Petty took a second shot, which was also saved but not controlled. Senior Zach Schulz gathered the rebound and deposited the ball into the goal.
Less than four minutes later, Wilson-Santos played a through ball to the feet of Schulz who finished with a shot into the net for the game-tying score. With a little less than 10 minutes remaining, senior Austin Dunn played the ball in the middle of the field, and sent a pass to junior Cory Werner-Hoskins who finished his shot into the goal at the near post.
For the game, Olivet had a 23-11 advantage in total shots, with a 13-7 edge in shots-on-goal. Schulz led the way with five shots, followed by Wilson-Santos and senior John Leutzinger with three apiece. Junior Ryan Grashik earned the win in goal, making four saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Comets (3-3, 1-1 MIAA) host Alma College next Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.
