The Olivet College men’s soccer team was shutout by Hope College, 3-0, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the loss, the Comets slip into third-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team was shutout by Hope College, 3-0, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the loss, the Comets slip into third-place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings.
The Flying Dutchmen scored in the 11th minute off a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box. Olivet's best chance to score in the first half came in the 16th minute, but the score stayed 1-0 at halftime.
Senior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) had two headers saved by the Hope keeper in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Flying Dutchmen added another goal in the 60th minute when their initial shot hit off the post and the rebound was deposited into the net. Hope added its third goal in the 82nd minute.
For the game, the Comets were out-shot 20-12, but they did have a slight 9-8 edge in the second half. Junior Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and sophomore Ryan Grashik (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) split time in goal. Lang played the first half, making five saves, while Grashik played the final 45 minutes, making two saves.
Olivet hosts Trine (Ind.) University Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
