OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team defeated Spring Arbor University, 1-0, in its home-opener today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Comets (1-1) scored the only goal they would need in the 12th minute. Freshman Jared Wilson (Lansing/Everett) played the ball into the middle of the box. Sophomore captain Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) finished with a header low and into the corner of the goal. The Cougars had a chance to tie the game in the final minute, but a wide open shot clanged off the far post.
Olivet finished the game with an 18-15 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in shots-on-goal. Freshman Esteban Russell (DeWitt) led the way with six shots, three on-goal. Smyser had four, and sophomore Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) was next with three.
Freshman Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and junior Sam Cusmano (Haslett) combined for the shutout in goal. Lang played the first half, facing nine shots and making two saves. In action for the first time this season, Cusmano played the entire second half and faced six shots.
The Comets continue their non-conference schedule Saturday when they host Rochester College. Game time is noon.
