FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College senior Jamaul Martin and freshman Anthony Merriman have been named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Players of the Week for football. Martin is the Offensive Player of the Week, and Merriman is the Defensive Player of the Week for their performance in the Comets' 21-17 win over Kalamazoo College.
Martin had 36 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown covered 22 yards and the second touchdown, the winning score, came from two yards out with 11:40 left in the game. Merriman tallied seven total tackles, including six solo stops and one for negative four yards.
"Jamual had his best game as a Comet last Saturday," said Olivet offensive coordinator Brad Rumsey. "He ran with great vision and put the ball where it was supposed to go time after time. One of my favorite things about Jamaul is his running style. He is not a big back but he runs with aggression and a never quit attitude. Jamaul always finishes runs in traffic and in space with physicality. He had impressive numbers when he carried the ball but he was unselfish and did the dirty work in pass protection too. It was the kind of performance you would expect from a senior in one of his last home games. Hopefully we can expect more of the same from Jamual this week against an Alma team that looks to be improving with each game."
Olivet (5-3, 3-2 MIAA) is back in action Saturday when it hosts Alma College. Kick-off at the Cutler Athletic Complex is 1 p.m.
