The Comets opened MIAA play last Saturday with a 72-7 victory over Finlandia University at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Eight different Comets found the back of the end zone. For the game, Olivet had 31 first downs and 560 yards of offense compared to nine first downs and 123 yards for the Lions. Ten players had at least one carry. In one half of play, Gary Tompkins III had 13 carries for 102 yards. Noah McMinn finished with 83 yards and two touchdowns. Three of the four quarterbacks to play in the game combined to complete 16-of-17 passes for 204 yards. Lane Porter was 12-of-13 for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Eleven receivers had a reception. Nick Thomas hauled in three passes for 32 yards, while freshman Justin Meeks finished with a team-high 43 receiving yards. Defensively, Andrew Campbell and Jamie Shaffer each had four tackles. Mo Young tallied three tackles, including two and one-half for minus 10 yards.
For the season, the Comets are averaging 471.8 yards of offense -- 272.8 on the ground and 199.0 through the air. Matthew Ellis leads the team with 412 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Jamaul Martin has also scored five touchdowns to go along with 399 rushing yards. Porter has completed 58-of-84 passes for 725 yards and eight touchdowns. Jacob Jodway has seven catches for a team-high 203 yards. Thomas has hauled in a team-high 15 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Talbott also has two touchdown receptions. In addition, Olivet is the only NCAA Division III school to not commit a turnover this season.
Defensively, Chase Cavric has a team-high 34 total tackles, including three quarterback sacks. Jacob Jordan and Tyler Mojet are next with 22 tackles apiece. John Adams III tops the secondary with four interceptions.
On special teams, Douglas Pollard has made two field goals and 23-of-23 PAT kicks for 29 points. He and freshman Tyrain Connor have split punting duties, with Pollard averaging 37.6 yards on seven kicks and Connor averaging 32.0 yards on six kicks. In addition, Pollard has handled kickoff duties, with a 56.6 average on 31 kicks. Adams III has returned seven kickoffs for 115 yards and two punts for seven yards. Martin is averaging 20.0 yards on five kickoff returns. Sophomore Hayden Barry-Coulier has eight punt returns for a team-high 51 yards.
Adrian enters the game with a 2-2 overall record. The Bulldogs started MIAA play with a 31-30 loss last Saturday at Kalamazoo College. Jerron McGaw led all receivers with nine receptions for 201 yards and three touchdowns, and Emmanuel Stewart rushed for 148 yards. Jack Wurzer threw for 349 yards and two interceptions on 19-of-34 passing. Shawn Starks had seven solo tackles.
