Three student-athletes named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV teams
Three Olivet College student-athletes have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV teams as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America.
OLIVET, Mich. -- Three Olivet College student-athletes have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV teams as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America. Junior Jeff Iciek (Hopkins) and senior Travis Sleight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) were named to the football team, while sophomore Jessica Petkus (Milford) was named to the volleyball third-team
Iciek and Sleight advance to the national Academic All-America ballot. The District IV teams are selected by sports information directors in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve with a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA).
Iciek carries a 3.97 grade point average (GPA) in sociology. He has started every game for the Comets at the offensive guard position. Iciek has helped block for the Comet rushing attack, which ranks first in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association at 271.3 yards per game.
Sleight has a 3.94 GPA in health, physical education, recreation and sport. He leads Olivet with 167 carries for 1,021 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 14 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Sleight, who earned 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America third-team honors, is the college's single-game (42), single-season (120) and career (300) scoring leader. He also earned 2003 and 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV honors.
The Comets (5-4, 4-2 MIAA) wrap-up their 2005 regular season Saturday, Nov. 12, when they host Albion College. Kickoff from the Cutler Athletic Complex in 1 p.m.
Petkus carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in English. She started every match this season at the setter position. In 32 matches and 118 games, Petkus recorded 1,210 assists along with 80 kills, 15 service aces, 304 digs and 32 blocks.
Olivet concluded its 2005 season with a 7-25 overall record and 4-12 MIAA mark.
