FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College freshman Junior Gomez has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Position Player of the Week for baseball. He is earning the honor for the second time this season.
Gomez posted a .471 batting average (8-of-17) during the Comets' final four games at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida. His eight hits were five singles, two doubles and one triple for a .706 slugging percentage. In addition, Gomez drove in five runs and played an errorless defense at first base with zero miscues in 25 chances.
"Junior had another great week at the dish," said head coach Andy Merchant. "We have some quality bats that took a while to get going and he really helped carry us offensively during that time. Junior has adjusted well to getting pitched tougher, and he continues to put up big numbers in the middle of our lineup."
The Comets open MIAA play this weekend with a four-game series against Albion College. The first two games are scheduled for Saturday at Frank Joranko Field in Albion, and the last two games are Sunday at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Both doubleheaders have a 1 p.m. start time.
