Baseball team opens season with 4-2 win over Ohio Northern
Behind eight strong innings on the mound from senior Jay Magro (Bridgman), the Olivet College baseball team opened the 2013 season with a 4-2 win over Ohio Northern University today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla. Senior Andrew Brawley (Niles) threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick-up the save.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Behind eight strong innings on the mound from senior Jay Magro (Bridgman), the Olivet College baseball team opened the 2013 season with a 4-2 win over Ohio Northern University today at the Gene Cusic Classic and inside Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla. Senior Andrew Brawley (Niles) threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick-up the save.
Olivet scored three times in the fifth inning. Junior Joel Peters (Auburn Hills/Avondale) and sophomore Beau Langs (Climax/Climax-Scotts) had back-to-back singles. Senior Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) lined a single to score Peters. Langs moved up to third base and Young took second base on the throw to the plate. Brawley then delivered a two-run double.
The Polar Bears got two runs back on a two-run home run from Dan Belliveau in the top half of the sixth. The Comets answered with a run in their half of the sixth on a RBI-single by Peters. Magro retired the batters in order in the seventh and eighth innings, Brawley did the same in the ninth.
Brawley went 4-for-4 at the plate. Peters had two hits, while four other Olivet players each had one hit. Magro allowed the two runs on six hits, while striking out three and not walking a batter.
The Comets will return to Terry Park tomorrow and will play Hiram (Ohio) College at 9 a.m.
